Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has launched Kerala’s first integrated multi-lab system, the Sustainable Ecosystem and Environmental Resilience (SEER) Lab, at its Amritapuri campus. It aims to provide cutting-edge research and analytical services, fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
This innovative initiative by the university brings together five specialized labs that address key environmental concerns: the Water Sustainability Lab, Soil Ecosystem Lab, Microbiology Lab, Climate Change & Water Resilience Lab and Marine Ecosystem Lab.
The SEER Lab, funded by Amrita, is the realisation of a long-held vision by Amma as Chancellor. She has always emphasised the importance of research in sustainable living. The lab focuses on studying the impact of changes in water, soil, and marine ecosystems on human life.
The SEER Lab was inaugurated by Swami Shubamritananda Puri, Director of the Mata Amritanandamayi Center, Europe, during a ceremony at the campus. In his address, Swami Shubamritananda Puri highlighted that the SEER Lab is more than just a technical facility, it is a symbol of social responsibility, inspiring future generations to adopt sustainable development practices.
Dr. Maneesha V. Ramesh, Provost and Dean of the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures, welcomed the attendees. Dr. M. Ravishankar, Principal of the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures, and Dr. Sudha Arlikatti, Head of Research, Sustainable Futures also graced the occasion.
The SEER Lab is organised into five specialised divisions, each with a distinct focus:
- The Water Sustainability Lab offers facilities for water quality analysis, treatment and management for both research and public use.
- The Soil Ecosystem Lab is dedicated to soil health assessment, fertility management, and ecosystem restoration.
- The Microbiology Lab examines the role of microorganisms in maintaining ecosystem health and managing diseases.
- The Climate Change and Water Resilience Lab focusses on climate change impacts on water resources, water resilience, and adaptation strategies.
- The Marine Ecosystem Lab is dedicated to investigating the complex relationships within marine ecosystems, conservation and sustainable management and covers areas such as Ocean Acidification Research, Underwater Robotics Research, and Marine Physiology Research.
The mission of the SEER Lab is to promote sustainability and environmental protection, especially among young people. Through its work, the lab aims to safeguard ecosystems and inspire the next generation to lead future sustainability efforts.
