Amrita Niketanam was started in 1989 when Amma was requested to take over the debt and management of a bankrupt children’s home in Parippally, Kerala. Amma diverted the funds set aside to build the Kali Temple of the Ashram and completely renovated the orphanage and transformed the atmosphere with a profound concern for the children’s wellbeing. Buildings were upgraded, medical care and nutritious food were provided. The children began to feel a sense of security, many for the first time in their lives. Amrita Niketanam has been home to up to 400 children from families that faced endemic poverty, substance abuse, and domestic violence.
