Amrita University’s Professor of Aerospace Engineering, Dr. Shantanu Bhowmik, has developed a groundbreaking lightweight hybrid composite material that is bullet-proof, blast-proof, and fire-proof. Dr. Bhowmik’s work positions India as a leader in global defence research, also marking a significant advancement for the university.

Meeting NATO’s STANAG Levels 3 and 4 standards, this material is three times lighter than steel while offering exceptional resilience in extreme conditions. Successfully tested in terrains like the Siachen Glacier, this innovation enhances protection for defence vehicles, bunkers, and more.

“This revolutionary hybrid composite showcases India’s swiftly advancing capabilities in homegrown defence technology. It highlights our commitment to promoting essential research aimed at benefiting both the nation and the global community,” said Dr Bhowmik.

Aligned with the Make in India initiative, this innovation could save the nation ₹20,000 crore ($2 billion) annually by reducing dependence on imports. Supported by Lt. Gen. Subrata Saha (Retd.) and endorsed by Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the composite represents a significant milestone in advancing indigenous defence technology.

Dr. Bhowmik has named the composites after five legendary Indian heroes to celebrate the India’s heritage: Netaji Subhas Armour (Lightweight Bulletproof Composite), Chatrapati Shivaji Armour (Blast-Proof Composite), Rani Lakshmi Bai Armour (Fireproof Composite), Rani Chennamma Armour (Transparent Bulletproof Composite), and Shaheed Udham Singh Armour (Mine-Blast Resistant Composite).

The hybrid composite provides unmatched protection for vehicles, bunkers, and special operation boats, withstanding blasts (up to 10 kg of TNT), sniper rifle rounds, and gunfire. Extensive testing at the Siachen Glacier and TBRL in Chandigarh underscores its reliability in extreme terrains and conditions.

With support from Carborundum Universal Ltd, Bharat Forge Ltd, and Gharda Chemicals Ltd, this innovation reflects Amrita University’s dedication to advancing research for national and global security.
