New Skills for New Lives

Uplifting the poorest of the poor in villages, housing colonies and slums

It is an initiative that not only provides skills to earn a living. Since 2003, Amrita-JSS has instilled some of India’s poorest of the poor with self-confidence and hope. More than 100,000 people have been trained in vocations ranging from tailoring to plumbing to beauty care.

We work to uplift the most marginalised sections of society with a focus on women, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, minorities, and other marginalised communities. Since the people lack infrastructure and resources, we take the initiative to arrive at their doorsteps.

We have reached nearly 600 villages and more than 100 urban and semi-urban communities that include colonies and slum pockets. Funded by India’s Ministry of Skills Development & Entrepreneurship, our centres run in Idukki, Kerala; Virudhunagar and Chennai, Tamil Nadu; Angul and Kalahandi, Odisha; East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya; Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh; and Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

These people, once down-trodden by society, become upstanding members of the community who can independently support their families. They also become an inspiration by reaching out to others facing the same challenges. Most importantly, as human beings, they are able to live.
