In landslide-stricken Wayanad, immediate relief efforts have begun in the north-eastern district of Kerala. Amrita Hospital, Kochi, received approval from the state government to dispatch its Disaster Management Medical Unit vehicle. As well, volunteers from the Wayanad Ashram and AYUDH, our youth chapter, headed to relief camps to assist in whatever way possible.
“My children, the landslides in Wayanad and the huge loss of life, destruction and misery are deeply painful. Amma shares the suffering of all those affected by this tragedy. In times of crisis like this, it is imperative that we come together to help each other as best we can,” said Amma in a message from her US tour in Washington, DC.
“Let us pray for the peace of the souls of those who lost their lives, as well as for their loved ones who are in grieving. Let us work with love, compassion and courage to support all the survivors. Let us sincerely pray to God for their healing.”
The emergency medical team is headed by Dr Jaggu and Dr Sreekumar. It includes 20 doctors, technicians, and paramedical staff to treat survivors. Many of the doctors and healthcare workers are experienced in disaster response, including after floods, landslides and earthquakes throughout India.
Kerala Govt Minister, P Rajeev, flagged off our Disaster Management Medical Unit vehicle from Kochi at 3pm today. It is equipped with a mini operation theater and equipment for x-ray, ultrasound, echocardiogram, and a high-speed lab.
“The disaster that has occurred in Wayanad is heart-wrenching; we need assistance and services at various levels. The vehicle that has departed from Amrita Hospital is specially designed to reach disaster areas to provide assistance, and this is a commendable mission,” said Mr Rajeev.
The Amrita Kripa Charitable Hospital in Wayanad’s capital of Kalpetta is also currently providing medical assistance in the disaster-affected area, further supporting the rescue efforts.
As well, as soon as the landslides struck, Brahmacharini Deekshitamrita Chaitanya began leading volunteers with the Wayanad Ashram and AYUDH to provide immediate support to people affected. Although small in number, they brought consolation and comfort to many who were suffering. Above all, they listened to the survivors in their shock and grieving.
Their actions included:
Relief Camp Visits – AYUDH Wayanad personally visited multiple relief camps to assess the situation and identify urgent needs.
Distribution of Essential Supplies – Volunteers distributed 500 plates to the Meppadi Arapetta relief camp to address immediate food requirements.
Provision of Warmth – Blankets were provided to the Meppadi St. Joseph High School camp to ensure the well-being of its residents.
Cremation Support – AYUDH Wayanad extended support to the public crematorium, assisting in the dignified handling of the deceased.
The Ashram’s rapid response and effective distribution of essential supplies are significantly alleviating the suffering of those affected by the landslide. These immediate actions have provided crucial support to the people in their recovery process.
