Amrita University introduces innovative AI system to monitor wild elephant movements

Amrita Elephant Watch is an innovative AI-powered monitoring system that addresses escalating human-wildlife conflicts, particularly involving elephants. Amrita University has introduced the advanced technology to help harmonise the relationship between humans and large wildlife in areas near forests. 

Developed by AMMACHI Labs, it employs AI-powered cameras and detection sensors to track the real-time movement of wild elephants. The cameras are strategically installed atop trees in regions frequently visited by the animals.  

When elephants enter these monitored zones, the sensors immediately activate, sending alert messages to connected mobile phones. Users include farmers, landowners, and authorities. Within seconds, they receive photos and video footage of the elephants, allowing for quick and informed responses to potential threats.   

In addition to instant alerts, the system provides video updates at regular intervals. It can assess the size of elephant groups and identify any dangerous individuals approaching populated areas.

The technology offers a crucial early warning system for residents in regions vulnerable to elephant intrusions. Moreover, it is versatile enough to monitor other wildlife, such as wild boars. 

“Our dedicated research team is focused on creating innovative technological solutions to tackle real-world challenges. Amrita Elephant Watch is a significant step towards wildlife conservation, protecting lives, and supporting livelihoods,” said Balu Mohandas Menon, Team Lead of Rural Technologies at AMMACHI Labs. 

“We are excited to bring this technology to our communities and make a positive impact on the ecosystem.” 

The development team, comprising Ayyappan Ajan, Ramakrishnan K., and B. Gokul Dev, led by Balu Mohandas Menon, successfully conducted pilot tests in Madukkarai, near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The university is now working to bring this technology to market.

Amrita Elephant Watch was recently showcased at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit 2023, earning acclaim from industry experts and policymakers. The project has also been recognised by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) under its “AI in Agriculture (Addressing Human-Elephant Conflict in Villages)” initiative. 

With Amrita Elephant Watch, Amrita University continues to lead in leveraging technology for sustainable solutions, ensuring the safety of both humans and wildlife while fostering a more harmonious coexistence.
