Wireless Network for Landslide Detection

Disaster Risk Management

Preparing Communities, Saving Lives

Amrita University’s Landslide Early Warning System (ALEWS) gives people precious time to move to safety before a landslide occurs. As the world’s first wireless sensor network-based system, it is earlier and more reliable than traditional methods that rely mainly on rainfall data.

The system has been installed in two of India’s most landslide-prone areas—Munnar, Kerala in 2009 and Gangtok, Sikkim in 2015. It has issued several warnings over the years and saved countless lives.

Sensors buried in the ground and placed on slopes continuously track rainfall, soil movement, and underground pressure. When they become unstable, alerts go to local authorities and disaster management teams. This allows them to warn nearby families, evacuate villages, and stop travel through dangerous areas.

The communities are also trained through workshops and mock drills on how to read warning levels, follow evacuation routes, and move quickly to designated safe zones. This reduces panic because they know exactly what to do.
