Innovative solutions for Children with Disabilities

Amma has always expressed the need to care for people with disabilities and help them overcome exclusion from the mainstream education system. It is a vision in which the children learn not only knowledge, but how to live with self-confidence and social responsibility.

Established at Amrita University in September 2025, the UNESCO Chair on Assistive Technologies in Education is dedicated to advancing inclusive education with a focus on closing the digital divide.

By using the latest in AI, audio, and video technologies, the initiative aims to make education more accessible for children with disabilities. Some of the  innovations being explored include tools for spoken-language development, audio descriptions for blind and low-vision users, and advancements in sign-language technology for deaf communities.

The Chair is committed to closing the gap created by limited access to technology. This disparity is especially visible among children from underserved rural communities—and even more so for children with disabilities, who are often left out of mainstream education.

The university works closely with people with disabilities, disability leaders, and the wider community. This ensures that accessibility isn’t just a label—it’s built into every idea, every tool, and every project from the very beginning.

This spirit of inclusion is also reflected in schools like the Amrita Institute for Differently Abled and the Amrita Speech and Hearing Improvement School, both founded by Amma. These schools focus on empowering every student by involving them in decisions about their own learning needs. It’s a powerful example of how compassion, innovation, and education can come together to create meaningful change.
