Welcome to the new Amma.org
We’ve merged the Amrita World and Embracing the World websites into this new site.
Mother Sea—an ancient source of life and a new frontier for compassionate action. Across the world, seaweed cultivation is emerging as an exciting nature-based solution for food security, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience. For women in India’s coastal villages, it also builds a reliable path to financial independence.
In 2023, Amrita University’s Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality (CWEGE) launched Blue is the New Pink. This coastal initiative aims to empower rural women through sustainable marine livelihoods. The cultivation began with intensive pilots in nine villages in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram District and then one in Kollam, Kerala.
In 2026, the initial stages of cultivation have started in four districts In Andhra Pradesh: Budagatlapalem, Chirrayanam, Mangamaripeta, and Ichapuram, as well as in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. The training has evoked profound personal transformation for the women. Traditionally, women would not enter the sea and many held a deep fear of the water. Through safety training, proper equipment, and confidence-building exercises, they bravely overcame their fears. Today, these women are stepping up as ecological stewards of their coastlines and becoming primary breadwinners. One of the farmers shared, “Before, we used to help our husbands. Now, they help us.”
Amma teaches that humanity and nature are not separate. Alongside seaweed farming, the women are involved in a concurrent seagrass restoration project. Seagrass plays a vital role in regenerating marine ecosystems, acting as a powerful carbon sink that mitigates climate change. To date, these combined cultivation and restoration efforts have conserved approximately 115 hectares of marine habitat, protecting critical feeding grounds for endangered species and enriching local biodiversity.
Local community enterprises are also flourishing by turning the seaweed harvest into commercial products. Last year, AMMACHI Labs showcased two flagship products: probiotic-rich seaweed pickles and savoury seaweed pakoras. The teams are currently exploring other ways to meet the growing global demand for marine-based goods, including natural seaweed soaps.
Ultimately, “Blue is the New Pink” has proven to be a viable model for grassroots change—positioning rural women as the driving force behind both climate resilience and economic independence.
