Welcome to the new Amma.org
We’ve merged the Amrita World and Embracing the World websites into this new site.
The Amrita Institute for Differently Abled (AIDA) is dedicated to guiding children with Down’s Syndrome, epilepsy, autism and other intellectual disabilities discover their self-confidence and independence. The schools opened in 2009, with one in Ernakulam and one in Kozhikode, Kerala.
In a unique way, the staff and families join together to instill the students with basic life skills, education, and the ability to express themselves. By listening carefully and going to their level of understanding, this approach to therapy allows development as each child decides. As well, they learn to work together to support the wellbeing of their community.
Most of the students are teenagers with advanced disabilities, arriving at the school unable to follow daily routines and trouble communicating. But with AIDA’s approach, a transformation happens.
Many start from not knowing how to do something as simple as brushing their hair and evolve to sharing their thoughts through beautiful works of art.
AIDA’s teachers have established many different outlets for this creative expression to develop. It is often discovered that while they may not excel academically, the children carry hidden talents. Properly cultivated, they can be nurtured to use these skills to make a living in their adult lives.
Amma offers us the possibility to connect online with her on a daily basis. During these livestreams, we can meditate with Amma, chant bhajans (devotional singing) and hear spiritual teachings.
