Saukhyam Reusable Sanitary Pads

Cost-effective, eco-friendly, reusable pads bring financial independence

The National Family Health Survey of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India (NFHS) 2015-2016 revealed that only 48.2% girls and women aged 15-24 in rural areas used hygienic methods of protection during their menstrual cycles.

We researched cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions to this problem and introduced reusable pads made from cotton cloth and banana fiber that last for 4-5 years. Banana fiber, the absorbent material in Saukhyam pads, is obtained from agricultural waste. The pads are not only better for the environment, but also for women’s health because they do not contain harmful chemicals. The reusable pads also help save money, since there is no need to purchase them every month.

Saukhyam supports women’s self-help groups with seed capital and training to manufacture this eco-friendly alternative. Making these pads has become a means to earn a living for these women.

In December 2016 these pads won the Most Innovative Product Award from the National Institute of Rural Development in India.
