Care Home for People with HIV/AIDS

Restoring self-esteem and hope

A lifeline for people living in isolation and fear

In 2003 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, we opened a Community Care Center dedicated to helping people living with HIV and AIDS. The illness had caused many of those infected to not come out of their households because they felt ashamed. Even if they did visit hospitals, they were often sent away due to misconceptions about the disease being contagious.

The clinic gave great relief to the patients and their families through free medical care and social support, bringing back a sense of self-esteem and hope. Apart from quality healthcare, services included psychological, social and spiritual counseling; group therapy; vocational training; and educational support for the patients’ children.

Until 2012, the team treated both in-patients and out-patients, and when necessary, doctors and nurses visited people in their homes to provide pain and palliative care.
