The cremation of Damayanthiamma took place on Tuesday evening at the Amritapuri ashram. Monastic disciples, Ashram residents, and visitors from the surrounding locality poured in to offer their tributes and prayers. People from political and social circles also paid their last respects.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a letter to express his condolences to Amma, her family, her disciples, and her devotees. In his message, he said that Damayanthiamma was a pious lady who had concern for everyone’s welfare. He added that this is a great loss not only to the family, but to the entire community of believers associated with the Mata Amritanandamayi Math, as Damayanthiamma considered them as her own children.
Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called Damayanthiamma’s son Suresh Kumar to convey his sympathies. Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal, MLA Ramesh Chennithala, CR Mahesh, Unnikrishnan, MP AM Arif, BJP State President K. Surendran, Hindu Ikyavedi State Working President Vatsan Tillankeri, BDJS State President Tushar Vellapalli, Sivagiri Dharma Sangham Trust President Swami Satchidananda, Vishwa Hindu Parishad State President VG Thambi, Former Minister Shibu Baby John, Former PSC Chairman Dr. KS Radhakrishnan, former DGP TP Senkumar, former DGP Rishiraj Singh, Congress leader Adv. M. Liju, and many others from different sectors of society also came to pay their last respects.
Damayanthiamma was the wife of the late Sugunanandan of Edammannel in Karunagappally, Kollam. At 97 years old, she passed away at her home in the ashram due to age-related ailments. Kasthuri Bhai, late Subhagan, Sugunamma, Sajini, Suresh Kumar, Satish Kumar, Sudheer Kumar are her other children. Rishikesh, Shaji, Raju, Geeta, Rajashree, and Manisha are their spouses.
