In December of 2014, our own Amrita Hospital in Kochi installed the da Vinci Surgical System, a state of the art robotic surgical platform. Amrita offers sophisticated and compassionate care in a serene and beautiful atmosphere, and is recognized as one of the premier hospitals in South Asia. Our commitment to serving the poor has attracted a dedicated team of highly qualified medical professionals from around the world. Since opening its doors in 1998, Amrita has provided more than $70 million worth of charitable medical care; more than 3 million patients received completely free treatment.
The da Vinci Surgical System is a tool that utilizes advanced robotic technologies to assist the surgeon with an operation. It does not act on its own; the surgeon controls its movements instead. The da Vinci Surgery System offers an attractive alternative to traditional surgery because it is less invasive than traditional open surgery, and it expands the surgeon’s capabilities as well. With the da Vinci surgical robot, the surgeon’s incisions are much smaller than those made by hand. Compared with traditional surgery, the da Vinci Surgery may result in fewer complications, less blood loss, less need for narcotic pain medicine, smaller incisions for minimal scarring, and a faster recovery, often resulting in a shorter and cheaper hospital stay.
Amrita Hospital currently uses the da Vinci Surgical System for gastro-surgical, uro-surgical and gynec-oncologic surgeries.
