After the deadly landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district, the disaster relief medical unit from Amrita Hospital, Kochi has been providing free care to people in relief camps. Volunteers with AYUDH, our youth wing, are also on the ground to assist.

Many people in the camps, particularly those with cardiac and diabetic conditions, lost their medical records in the calamity. They are receiving necessary tests and medications.

The 20-member medical team, led by Dr. Jaggu, Dr. Sreekumar, and Dr. Sanjeev Vasudevan, along with a group of technicians and paramedics, is operating from a specially designed disaster management medical vehicle, currently stationed at Meppadi Higher Secondary School.

For the past three days, doctors have been visiting various relief camps throughout the district, transporting patients in need of medical attention in three of Amrita’s ambulances to the disaster management medical unit, where they receive state-of-the-art care.

The mobile unit is equipped with advanced medical facilities, including X-ray, ECG, ultrasound, and echo services, as well as a high-speed laboratory and Doppler scans for cardiac patients. It also houses 7,000 litres of oxygen storage.

Many with the Amrita Hospital team are experienced in disaster relief, strengthening their ability to bring hope and relief to the people of Wayanad. Response over the years includes the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, 2018 Kerala Floods, 2014 Jammu & Kashmir Floods, 2013 Uttarakhand Floods, 2009 Floods in Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh, and the 2001 Gujarat Earthquake.
