A group asana practice to purify the body and uplift the mind, in celebration of International Yoga Day

On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. This date coincides with Summer Solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, which has special significance all over the world.

Yoga practitioners doing downward dogInternational Yoga day was celebrated by the Toronto Satsang on Saturday, June 24, 2017. About fifteen participants spent forty five minutes practicing yoga asanas (postures or poses) and breath awareness.

The group was introduced to ten asanas, and was guided through an understanding these of postures and their benefits. The yoga session ended with fifteen minutes in Shavasana (Corpse) pose and deep relaxation. After the session, the participants commented on how much they enjoyed practicing yoga in a group setting and the importance of incorporating this ancient practice into daily life.

Amma says: "The body is like a bridge that connects us with our inner self. The human body is the temple of the indwelling God. Hence, purification of the body is very important."
