WiFi Telemedicine System in AIMS

In an effort to deliver specialized medical care to various parts where there is no access to health care, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) launched its phenomenal telemedicine system and network under the banner of ‘Digital health at every door step’. The initiative aims at improving general health of India by providing the state-of-the-art facilities to the rural masses noting that villages lack timely and effective delivery of health care.

Bridging Gap

While 90 per cent of the tertiary care centers are concentrated in the urban areas, 70 per cent of the country’s population is distributed in the rural areas. Hence this project also aims at bridging the gap.

Apart from catering to rural masses, it will also focus on corporate executive check-ups to maintain sustainability.

High speed network

AIMS has developed a high speed wireless fidelity network and an all digital mobile telemedicine unit equipped with wireless enabled clinical diagnostic medical equipment, with the support of ISRO, Ashraya Hastha Trust, Direct Relief International and Media Lab Asia.

The initiative will ensure easy access to health and cost effective treatment and will also be acceptable and convenient to patients.

The mobile unit will visit villages on fixed schedules, do health screening and periodical follow ups, besides delivering community health education through the video conferencing link. It will also respond to all acute illnesses like chest pain, shortness of breath, possible stroke among others. Charges will be collected based on the socioeconomic status of the patients.

In remote areas

The wireless telemedicine unit instantly enables a variety of common biomedical and public healthcare diagnostic devices to capture body parameters directly from people in remote areas including those in disaster-hit areas, and immediately transmit wirelessly through a combination of ultra high speed WIFI and satellite networks to AIMS, the super specialty hospital in Kochi.

Body parameters can be simple temperature or blood pressure or sugar levels to the complex x-ray images or ophthalmologic videos.

The system uses advanced technological breakthroughs to separate out inexpensive probes that can be mobile from more expensive backend processing stationary at the remote super- specialty hospital.
