Tablas are highly complex drums, commonly used in North Indian classical music, but its versatility in all musical styles has enabled it to become the most popular percussion instrument in all of India. The level of sophistication and tonal beauty it possesses has elevated the instrument to an unmatched status in the world of percussion. First references rhythmic systems of Indian music are found in the Vedas, a sacred collection of literature in the ancient Sanskrit language dating from 1500 BC. Tabla is a pair of drums, one tuned to a treble tone and the other to a flexible low bass tone.

Lalitha Russell met Sri Mata Amritanandamayi (also known as Amma) in 1994 at the MA Center San Ramon at the age of 11yrs. From that time forward, Lalitha has been blessed to be touring and traveling with Amma on world tours accompanying Amma’s & her senior disciples' bhajans on kaimini and occasionally tabla. Lalitha considers music as a major part of her spiritual practice and feels blessed that Amma has blessed her teaching of tabla at the MA Center. She is currently studying classical Hindustani tabla with Shri. Salish Tare at the Tabla Niketan school working to achieve Visharad. With a deep love for the arts she keeps up with the latest trends by attending workshops and camps with Zakir Hussain and other great artists.
