Amma’s Pantry Update

Amma’s Pantry held its first Bag Exchange on Saturday, February 9th, 2013. Participants brought their reusable green bags filled with non-perishable food items and received another, empty bag to take home. On Monday 2/11 the bags were brought to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano for weighing, sorting and distribution. A total of 773 lbs of food was donated by Amma’s Pantry participants, which translates into 618 meals for local families and individuals.

Joan Tomasini of the Food Bank said that of the Bay Area “founders” adapting this neighborhood food drive model from Oregon, Amma’s Pantry is the largest group so far. Including the Bay Area satsang members who signed up on 2/9, Amma’s Pantry now has over 80 participants. The next Bag Exchange date is scheduled for April 13th, 2013.
